PARIS, France - Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Eugenie Bouchard, now Carla Suárez Navarro - the Spaniard became the latest Top 8 seed to fall in Week 1, getting taken out by Flavia Pennetta.
Though Pennetta had beaten Suárez Navarro in four of their six previous meetings, many picked Suárez Navarro as the favorite in this one given nobody has done more winning on the tour this year - she had a WTA-leading 33 wins on the season coming into this one. But Pennetta was just too strong on the day, ripping almost twice as many winners (20 to 11) and fewer unforced errors (25 to 28).
In the end the No.28-seeded Italian closed out the No.8-seeded Spaniard in just 69 minutes, 6-3, 6-4.
"First of all, Flavia played really well today," the World No.8 said. "Of course it's disappointing to lose, but Flavia is a really good player. She works really hard and is playing really good tennis. "She's playing good matches here and could go through to the quarterfinals or semifinals."
Pennetta is now through to the fourth round of the French Open for the third time in her career, having gone that far in 2008 (falling to Suárez Navarro) and 2010 (falling to Caroline Wozniacki).
Next up for Pennetta is another upset artist in Garbiñe Muguruza - the No.21-seeded WTA Rising Star came from a set down to beat No.11 seed Angelique Kerber for the first time in four tries, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Going in, Kerber had more WTA-level match wins on clay than anyone on the tour this year with 17.
"I'm very, very proud, because Kerber and I had very tough matches before, and finally I could beat her in a Grand Slam," Muguruza said. "So for me it's very special. I think it was 3-0, 4-0 down with her. They were very tough matches, like 7-5 in the third or 6-4, 7-something. I'm so happy with this match. "Obviously when you have such a great result the year before, you come here thinking, 'Oh, I did the quarterfinals or whatever.' You can't forget this. But it's a new year, a new tournament. I came here just trying to do my best. I knew I had to play well if I wanted to make the quarterfinals again. "But I'm just concentrating on my next match now. It will definitely be another tough one."
Muguruza has beaten Pennetta in both previous meetings, though both went to three sets.
