BAKU, Azerbaijan - Karin Knapp bounced back from her Bad Gastein disappointment with a comfortable opening round victory over Stefanie Voegele at the Baku Cup (Fonte: wtatennis.com)
On Sunday, Knapp served for the match in the final of the NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies only to be denied by a spectacular Samantha Stosur comeback. However, judging by her 6-1, 6-4 win over Voegele, the experience appears to have left no lasting ill-effects.
After her exploits in Bad Gastein, Knapp is rapidly closing in on a place in the Top 30. The Italian, whose career-high ranking currently stands at No.35, is now just 185 points adrift of World No.30 Camila Giorgi, a gap she could bridge with another deep run this week.
"This is a very tough match for me. I came from Europe where it was not so hot and so in my first match it's good to have a test in the second set," Knapp said after defeating Voegele. "It was a bit up and down, but I completed this match and hopefully I can get better after each match here."
Next up for the No.2 seed will be Anett Kontaveit on Thursday. Should Knapp come through that, Alexandra Panova lies in wait after she defeated Andrea Hlavackova, 7-6(4), 6-2, in the following match on court.
