ZHUHAI, China - Roberta Vinci has decided 2016 will be her final season on tour. Currently ranked No.15, Vinci made the announcement on Saturday after losing 6-2, 6-2 to V3enus Williams in the semifinals of the Zhuhai Elite Trophy
"For me next year is the last", Vinci said. "Probably I don't change my mind. Of course you never know, but it's tough. I'm not so young. I don't want to play more, more, more. I had a lot of success, a lot of victories, but sometimes it's time to change and stop".
The 32-year-old Italian was a surprise runner-up at the US Open after stunning World No.1 Serena Williams in the semifinals to make her first Slam final, where she lost to compatriot and recent retiree Flavia Pennetta. She finishes the season having won 16 of her last 23 matches, including two semifinals in Asia in Wuhan and Zhuhai.
"Well, a good three months", Vinci said, smiling. "Incredible month for me, incredible end of the season, and incredible ranking right now. But, you know, I'm happy that I finished. Now I can go take some days off, because I am tired right now. I played a lot, a lot of stress, a lot of pressure of course. So now I'm happy that I'm finished and that I have a good ranking. Happy to be in the Top 20 and ready for the next year".
Vinci will take some time off to regroup after a whirlwind finish to the season and then begin her regular preparation for the start of the season in Australia. She will do it knowing that 2016 will likely be her farewell tour.
"I want to change my life", she said, "so probably next year and then I'll finish".
